'Do you know who Gerry Mandering was? He was a white legislator that had a lot of power,' she was quoted as saying. 'And what we want to make sure is everybody has a fair opportunity to have representation in the United States Congress. In the House, the Senate, the city council and the school boards.'

Gerry Mandering? Actually, Massachussetts Gov. and former U.S. Vice President Elbridge Gerry in 1812 signed into law a district that was said to look like a salamander. That's where the term gerrymander took root.

Three Republicans running to take on Corrine Brown | jacksonville.com: "The 3rd Congressional District, which cuts a winding swath through Central Florida and roughly resembles the country of Italy, has been in the hands of Democrat Corrine Brown since 1992.

This year, a troika of Republicans think the time is right for change.

'The people in the third are very upset right now; politics as usual isn't going to change anything,' said Dean Black, a small business owner.

All three believe the time is right to take on Brown, but each stressed that his background uniquely qualifies him to be the one to move on to November's general election.

'I work to spur economic development by making loans available to help people's businesses grow and expand,' said Chris Nwasike, who has a background in the banking industry but is currently campaigning full time.

Michael Yost, 56, said he has separated himself from the competition because he does not have a political mentality.

'I am a principled statesman, not a politician,' Yost said. 'A statesman has the best interest of country at heart, whereas a politician has his own ambitions in mind.'

Black, 44, pointed to the diverse nature of the district, which extends from Jacksonville to Orange County, when explaining why he is the one best qualified to serve.

'I am a businessman, a military guy, and I speak Spanish almost fluently,' he said. 'This is a diverse district that needs a diverse candidate.'

Each touts unique traits, but when the conversation turns to issues, job creation sits atop each candidate's priority list. A goal shared by all three is to turn the district into an enterprise zone, which offers tax breaks to encourage economic growth in distressed areas.

Black took a shot at Brown, who is notorious for bringing earmarks to the district for a range of projects.

'Instead of projects, why don't we bring in businesses?' he asked. 'Let's reward those businesses that want to locate in the district.'

Nwasike, 31, said the goal of an enterprise zone should be to spur small businesses.

'I am not tackling necessarily Fortune 500 companies. Lets give local businesses the cash to employ people. It gives cash to the community,' he said.

Yost said the state's reliance on construction, agriculture and tourism has been a hindrance to both the state and district's economy.

'What we need to do in Florida is start attracting high tech, high medical-type industries,' he said.

Each candidate also blasted Brown for earmarks.

'Liberals in Washington, D.C., are spending us into oblivion. If something is not done, we will not have a future,' Nwasike said.

Brown has brought $664 million in district earmarks since 2008, far outpacing other area members of Congress.

'We don't need to put so much emphasis on pork-barrel projects,' Black said. He said they have mostly helped Brown's 'buddies.'

Yost, who also questioned who Brown's earmarks benefit, said he wants to reform the way earmarks are allocated.

'If a congressman in any district wants an earmark,' he said, 'let's require an up or down vote on that.'

Corrine Brown commanded Jacksonville FL city officials to deliver sandbags to her home to protect her from rising floodwaters caused by Tropical Storm Fay? I blogged about the Jacksonville Times-Union story at the time:

U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown’s office asked Mayor John Peyton’s chief of staff to help protect her Jacksonville home from rising floodwater Friday.

Adam Hollingsworth, who once worked for Brown, told city workers to deliver sandbags to her home, something he now says was a judgment error. No one else would get such preferential treatment, he said when contacted by the Times-Union, and Brown will be billed by the city for reimbursement.

Hollingsworth also told city workers to deliver sandbags to City Councilwoman Denise Lee, this time unsolicited.

Peyton did not condemn Hollingworth’s actions, saying Friday he was “delighted our public works employees were able to help save these homes.”

Ronnie Simmons, Brown’s chief of staff, said the congresswoman’s area director called the city’s Public Works Office and asked for help. He said he thought the city offered sandbags to residents whose homes were being flooded.

…About a dozen white sandbags were stacked in front of Brown’s garage Friday night. A man outside the house Friday night told the Times-Union the bags were not delivered by the city. He was wearing a dark blue Emergency Operations Center shirt but said he didn’t work for the city.

Well, residents there have not forgotten her arrogance and abuse of office. And neither has her GOP challenger, Dean Black. He has launched a humorous “Stop the Sandbagging” campaign to remind voters of Brown’s hubris. She’s not laughing:

One day after her political opponent launched a tongue-in-cheek campaign to unseat her, Rep. Corrine Brown fired back.

Dean Black launched a campaign Monday called “Stop the Sandbagging.” It’s a campaign that reminded voters of an August 2008 controversy when Brown requested sand bags be brought to her home during Tropical Storm Fay. Though she denied receiving special treatment from the city, her neighbors said similar requests from them had no response.

Black said that when his supporters contribute $24.95 to his campaign, he will have sand bags delivered to Brown’s home. However, Brown said Tuesday that she will seek prosecution if Black follows through on his pledge.

“Because this is not no game,” Brown said. “Don’t bring no trash to my yard!”

She said if the sand bags come, she is prepared to call the police.

Black is not backing down. Two thumbs up for this clever and inspired campaigning.

Dean Black, a former military man who has a 48-acre farm on Jacksonville's Northside, has mingled with the region's Republicans for months preaching the need for a GOP ouster in the Democrat-heavy 3rd Congressional District.

That would mean defeating U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, a nine-term Democratic incumbent who holds a major advantage in voter demographics, so much so that the state Republican Party gave up on backing challengers years ago.

But in the last few days, Black has come out in force. He announced candidacy on conservative talk radio Saturday before collecting more than $30,000 at his first official fundraising rally, according to a campaign spokesman.

Although some critics say Black will need to raise millions to run against Brown, his debut flexed financial muscle at five other Republicans running in a race where money has been so far tough to come by.

A political newcomer who said he's concerned about his five children's future, Black says he's the candidate to finally do what so many of Brown's challengers couldn't. His network, if it comes together as planned, may be what separates him from the pack.

He has taken on Robert Smith of St. Augustine as campaign manager. Smith has been active in Republican politics and campaign strategy for more than three decades. Smith also has ties in former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio's U.S. Senate run.

Black didn't want to talk strategy specifics but said the basic goal is to put together a 2,000-member coalition to knock on doors and get out the vote. He also said it will take about $750,000 to wage a credible campaign.

Critics say Black, who is white, may have trouble conveying his message in the predominantly black district. Black disregards this.

"If I ran my pet rock against Corrine Brown, my pet rock could get more votes because ethics matter, and policy positions matter," he said. "This is an American thing. It's not a red-state thing.

"It's not a black thing or a white thing. It's a red, white and blue thing."

Although there are 168,000 more Democrats than Republicans in Brown's district, Black contends they're becoming more conservative and fed up with liberal representation.

He might be on to something. Earlier this month Brown was berated by public-option health care critics while giving a speech at a Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce forum. The Gainesville Sun reported that Brown had a tear roll down her face at one point and quoted her chief of staff, Ronnie Simmons, saying Brown had never been ambushed like that.

Brown has said she's not planning to campaign until six to eight weeks before the Nov. 2 general election. She said she will concentrate on her duties in Washington. The health care overhaul, which she voted for, has been top on the list.

Her campaign responded with a written statement:

"If and when Mr. Black is fortunate enough to qualify to run for office by the April 30 deadline and make it out of the Republican primary, then I will see him at the ballot box in November. However, until that time occurs, I will continue to let the work I've done speak for me."

In the 3rd Congressional District, census data shows 26 percent of people have no health insurance. Black argues the public option isn't the answer.

If the district had better employment opportunities, he said more people would have health insurance.

He's also critical of Brown's support of the economic stimulus package, arguing that a suspension of payroll taxes would have been a more effective way to put money in the economy.

Black, 44, is a 1983 Terry Parker High graduate who went on to serve in the Air Force. He franchises transmission shops for a living. He also farms everything from chickens to timber.

Corrine Brown won’t be running for U.S. Senate.

“Many people have told me that I would be a great Senator one day, but right now they say they need me in the House to fight their fights and make a difference,” Brown said. “I believe I could have defeated Charlie Crist, because substance always trumps photo-ops, but right now I need to look after my constituents.”

Despite opening an exploratory committee, few politicos actually thought Brown was serious about making the race. Theories about her shadow campaign have labeled it as either a publicity stunt or a fundraising scheme. Either way, Brown has decided to stick with the job she’s held since 1992.

“During these hard economic times, Congresswoman Brown’s experience and continued leadership will benefit all Floridians, as Democrats in Congress work to jumpstart our economy, create jobs and reform the broken health insurance system,” Florida Democratic leader Karen Thurman said.

Congressman Kendrick Meek, now the clear frontrunner for the Democratic Senate nomination, issued a statement thanking Brown for her service.

“The families of northeast and central Florida are fortunate to have Chairwoman Corrine Brown as their Congresswoman,” Meek said. “I respect her career of legislative accomplishments, and with her seniority there is no greater advocate in Congress to help bring high-speed rail to central Florida and thousands of jobs to the I-4 corridor. Job fairs that she has organized in Jacksonville and Orlando are helping to put thousands of people back to work and only Congresswoman Brown can deliver those results. I look forward to continuing to work alongside Congresswoman Brown and deliver a shared agenda of progress for the people of Florida.”

Brown will now focus her full attention on seeking re-election to her House seat next year. Three candidates have already filed to challenge her in the heavily-Democratic district. Even less funny is the fact that Grayson is one of those rare birds: a petulant demagogue who dishes out the nastiest rhetoric imaginable but who turns into a goose-stepping fascist when someone has the temerity to criticize him.

Hence Grayon's ridiculous 4-page letter last month asking Attorney General Eric Holder to prosecute a woman named Angie Langley who set up a website critical of Grayson called "MyCongressmanIsNuts.com."

Among Grayson's complaints - I kid you not - was that "Ms. Langley has chosen a name for her committee that is utterly
tasteless and juvenile." Cue the laugh track.

Even the Orlando Sentinel editorial page - not exactly a bastion of right wing nuts - slammed Grayson for the move, calling it "an odd and ironic response from Mr. Grayson, one of the most intemperate voices in Washington."

One can only hope the good folks in Florida's 8th Congressional district will make this Grayson's last year in office.

Let's start with the basics. Her corruption is a matter of public record and is not debatable. Yet she keeps getting re-elected time after time. However, after looking at her district, this is easily explained. Her constituents are primarily the most easily influenced and gullible of all voters allowed to freely cast a vote whether it be legal or not. Her continued tenure in the house is reflective of the reason that Obama was elected and is rooted in race. She is black. Sorry folks, but that is the only reason this little communist is still in office. She is elected to the same dead end election after election as a result and the people who vote her in, have no clue what she is all about.

As a Florida state legislator, Corrine Brown was fined $5,000 for using state employees for her travel business. Possibly the unwashed masses deserved to be represented by a politician that felt that taxpayer money was her money. Or maybe she was aware that they would never check to see what she was doing or that they would have no clue what the charges meant.

After becoming a member of the House of Representatives in '93, she was investigated for forgery. In '96 she was accused of receiving money from Henry Lyons from an account used for money laundering. The check for $10,000 exceeded the $1,000 individual donation limit. Hello dumb people. She accepted dirty money in return for as yet unknown political favors. Makes you wonder. If you have ten thousand dollars in your pocket not up to anything much, can you buy a representative by the name of Corrine Brown?

Her association with Lyons was a matter of history. In 1992 she paid Lyons $5,000 for a computer. And this was to a company that had been defunct for six years. She also arranged for Lyons to buy airline tickets at government discount rates. Little bit of pat my butt I'll pat yours at taxpayer expense.

In 2004 Brown referred to President Bushs' administration as “racist”. She went further to tell Assistant Secretary of Stater Roger Noriega, an American of Mexican descent, that “you all look alike to me”. Mr. Noriega said that he deeply resented being called a racist.

But let's look at her socialist leanings and perhaps see how this cancer on free society survives.

Brown is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The CPC is the largest supposedly non-party caucus in the US Congress and works to advance socialist ideals and legislation. The CPC is supported by a large number of liberal and socialist organizations. These include moveon.org, Americans for Democratic Action, Progressive Democrats of America, ACLU, and Progressive Majority. In 2000 the Democratic Socialist of America got behind the CPC and declared that they both shared “operative social democratic politics”.

The Democratic Socialists of America party agenda is simple. It is to destroy our way of life and replace it with a communistic agenda that will suit their global world government ideal. Be aware fellow citizens, free thinkers, unwashed masses, and all of you who believe that bumper stickers can change the world, these people simply want to control you and dictate your every move.

To date, the CPC has not publicly cut its' ties with the Democratic Socialists of America and in fact many member of the CPC are silently if not publicly members of the DSA.

I personally distrust any representative of any body of state or federal government that joins a “caucus”. What is that all about anyway? My feelings are that if you are elected to represent more than yourself, then your opinion should be whatever the majority of your constituents are. If the people I represent in theory want to ratify the tenth amendment, I should support that regardless of how I feel. If the people I represent want to close our borders, I should advance that to my utmost capability. I should not go joining a “caucus” that represents a splinter group and advance their agenda over those which I am supposed to speak for.

So has Brown represented you or not? DOH! Most of you have no clue do you? I could be nice and give you links to her bumblings and historic stupidity. But I won't. Look further in this blog for her corruption, stupidity and absolute ignorance. I've simply highlighted the problem to you. It's up to you to discover the depths which our political system has delved.

So is Brown a socialist or not? Question is, do you want someone who places their interests, their needs, their vices, their addictions above your basic human needs to represent you? Does Brown represent you or does she represent her own self interests and those of the movement to destroy the republic?

We have a chance in 2010 to overturn this government and elect a new representative government that will listen to us. We need to shout against the dying of the light and let our voices be heard. Let Brown know that we are fed up and we won't take anymore. I tried calling her to let her know that she was on report. After I said I didn't support the cap and tax bill, her staffer hung up on me and my calls were never answered since. So I tried email. I get a canned response that amounts to spit.

Look to 2010. We can turn this government around and we can make our voices heard. You need to shout it out, “I am tired of being ignored”.

According to govtrack.us http://www.govtrack.us/congress/person.xpd?id=400048 Brown is a "follower" in that she cosponsors bills for people who do not help sponsor hers. Since 1993 she has sponsored 42 bills of which 30 did not make it out of committee. However she has cosponsored 2541 bills. Now that is a leader in action. I picture her running around behind the real movers and shakers begging to let her sign on to their work. We need a representative with a brain.

Apparently she's as corrupt as she is stupid. She seems to get off by the simple fact that she pleads stupidity every time she's caught with her hand in the till. Common sense tells you that if these crimes are public and she's getting away with them, then she's got to be dirty. What is she up to behind the scenes?

Corrine Brown was proud to vote for the recent cap and tax bill today. In fact, she was so proud that she would not take my calls to ask her how she voted. After connecting successfully to one of her minions, I was asked my feelings on the matter. After saying that I was against the cap and tax bill, I was abruptly cut off and my further calls were not answered.

When I finally decided to call her local office, I was answered by a very nice young lady who conceded that the traitor to freedom Brown did in fact vote for the cap and tax bill. She appeared to be as flabbergasted as I by the event.

Lets face it. Corrine Brown is a clown and is not at all competent to represent us. She has repeatedly in the past been on the wrong side of history and has repeatedly embarrassed herself and us as well. It is time to flush this flotsam and get new representation in the house for us.

Join me in a movement to rid our govenrment of this laughable organism which is in fact a detriment and impediment to representative government.
